Emergency Response

Our top priority!!! Sewer back-ups, street flooding, frozen or blocked culverts, pump station failures are all events that require immediate response, no matter what time of day or night, weekends or holidays. Our goal is to be on site or in contact within 20 minutes of notification. Should you experience such an emergency, please contact the Wastewater Treatment Plant at 207-282-1350 or the Public Works Department at 282-1579 during business hours 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. During other times please call the Biddeford Police Department at 207-282-5127.

Day-to-Day Operations

We are responsible for:

  • 12 combined sewer outfalls
  • 23 wastewater pump stations
  • 1,200 or more manholes
  • Biddeford Pool Stone Cliff Wastewater Treatment Facility
  • CSO Tank
  • Over 100 road culverts
  • Over 3,000 catch basins
  • Over 50 miles of sanitary sewers and storm water lines
  • The Water Street Treatment Facility

Our daily efforts include locating these facilities (for utilities, planners, engineers and the general public) inspections, monitoring and record keeping.

Repair & Maintenance

During the course of a year, we clean all of our catch basins, manholes and culverts. Approximately 6 miles of sewer / storm lines are cleaned on an annual basis. Trouble spots are cleaned on a monthly basis to prevent problems. Repairs (other than emergencies) are scheduled to minimize impact to the public, existing services and the environment. Preventative maintenance is performed on a daily basis to the wastewater pump stations to assure their reliability, efficiency and to protect the environment.

Planning & Review

We provide technical expertise on the planning and design of any new wastewater facilities proposed by the city. Those responsible for the operation, maintenance and repair of those facilities provide a unique perspective during the planning and design of proposed facilities, assuring the best possible long-term end result. We also review proposed private developments in the same fashion to assure that facilities built privately meet the city standards.
