Program Assistant - Children’s Summer Camp/Youth Sports

Hours: full-time, 36 hours per week (paid for 40), hourly

Job Summary

Assists the Youth Sports and the Youth & Family Program Coordinators with programs, classes, and other general duties for the related programs, taking place at the Community Center and off site.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Coordinates with the Youth Sports Coordinator and Youth & Family Program Coordinator in the development and implementation of community recreation programs for children and teens;
  • Supervises classes, workshops and activities for youth engaged in recreation programs and co-sponsored programs;
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of physical activities, sports camps and special interest activities for youth;
  • Assist in the coordination of sports programs, registers children for teams, collects fees, acquires coaches, assigns practice times, distributes and collects uniforms;
  • Prepares, coordinates, implements the OSB summer camp program;
  • Responsible for the care and safety of participants in youth sports, OSB and related programs;
  • Responds to public inquiries about youth recreation programs made by telephone, correspondence, or during public meetings;
  • Responds to citizen’s/parents complaints/inquires about recreation programs;
  • Prepares for publication a variety of brochures, calendars, letters, posters, news releases, flyers, and related communications regarding recreation programs;
  • Maintains a variety of records, including registrations, reservations, permission slips, purchasing, accidents, and vandalism, etc.;
  • Assist the Youth Sports Coordinator in the scheduling of games and umpires for basketball, soccer, baseball, T-Ball, softball, and other sports;
  • Assist in the collection of Volunteer Applications related to youth sports to conduct background checks;
  • Performs a variety of miscellaneous duties such as answering phone, typing correspondence, running errands, picking up supplies needed for activities, helping set up tables and chairs for classes, etc;
  • Promotes interest and provides information regarding recreation programs to school officials, other recreation officials, community service groups, other departments, and the general public;
  • Fulfills the duties of the Youth Sports Coordinator in his or her absence.
  • Availability to work evenings and weekends;
  • Assists in the recruitment and selection of part-time and seasonal staff and volunteers;
  • Performs other work as required.


  • Graduation from a two-year college or university with a degree in recreation or a closely related field.
  • Two-years of recreation experience; or
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Coordinate and direct varied activities involved in a community recreation program;
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, families’ other agencies, participants, instructors, community leaders, and the general public;
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

Special Requirements

  • CDL Driver’s License (Preferred)

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $21.00 - $26.00 per hour
