Avian Influenza Affecting Local Bird Population

Biddeford Pool Convent Beach

The Northeast is currently experiencing an outbreak of Highly Pathogen Avian Influenza, more commonly known as bird flu. Many communities in our area are seeing high numbers of dead or dying birds on beaches that have been affected by the flu.

If you find a dead bird on the beach, DO NOT touch it or handle it. If a lifeguard is on duty, please notify them about the bird. If there is no lifeguard on duty, please contact the Police Department at their non-emergency number (207-282-5127).

Avian flu viruses normally spread among wild water birds, like ducks and geese. These viruses can spread to domestic poultry, like chickens, ducks, geese, and guinea hens. Avian flu viruses do not normally make humans sick but human infections with avian flu viruses have occurred.
